Park Butte Lookout

Sedro-Woolley, WA

The hike to Park Butte Lookout is 7.5 miles round trip, with a 2,200 ft. elevation gain. This hike is on the longer side, leading you through boulder fields, old growth forests, and open meadows. I've only completed this hike once, and when I did it there were blue skies, at the same time it was very cloudy and views of Baker were mostly obstructed. I set up my hammock for a couple hours by a lake near the lookout and waited for the clouds to clear out, but that didn't happed until I decided to head back down the mountain...of course. I was really upset at myself for not waiting until sunset because I would've gotten a killer view. Waiting is always worth it (if you have a flashlight to get back down) Even though I had obstructed views, I thoroughly enjoyed this hike, and spending time by the lake was extremely refreshing.

I was hiking alone, and hadn't encountered anyone else on my way up to the lookout. Once I reached the top, I heard a growling and my whole body froze. Fear entered my body, I scoped the ground for loose rocks to grab if necessary, and slowly peered through the bushes only to find a feisty little dog growling at me.

In terms of reward for least amount of effort, this hike is the winner. Roundtrip, this trail totals 3.4 miles with a 1300 ft. elevation gain. A perfect beginner hike. The lookout is open during the warmer months, (locked November through May) and you can stay the night at a first come first serve basis. From the lookout, you can see Twin Lakes down below, and take in sweeping views of the Northern Picket Range, Canadian peaks, Mt. Baker, and more. I've never done this trail during sunrise or sunset, but I bet it's incredible. I've only done this hike once, and I took in the view more than I took pictures, so I can't wait to do it a second time. I'm afraid I've missed my chance for the season though.Till next summer!

The road leading up to Twin Lakes is rough and a high clearance vehicle is required past the Yellow Aster Butte trailhead
